Hey Janky Dood, tell us about your work!
My illustrations are mainly “self-portraits," however recently there have been new characters popping up in my work. My portraits are about nothing and everything at the same time. I often incorporate the darkness and mundanity I feel with humor. Or sometimes it’s just a funny scene I envision in my head. Overall my life and I feel rather “janky,” and that’s what I try to emulate.
How did you get started?
I’ve been drawing since I could hold a pencil- it’s just something I’ve always done. One day at a cafe I was working at, I was doodling on a napkin and that’s how my Janky Dood character was born. I began drawing her more and developing my style, and eventually I decided I wanted to pursue this full-time. I quit my job and haven’t looked back since.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find a lot of inspiration from music and dog/cat memes. Or if I see something weird on the street.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Stop trying so hard to fit in. Being true to yourself is the best thing you can do.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
When I was 23 I moved to Australia for a year because “why not”. After that my friend in LA needed a roommate, so I moved to LA. I mean, why not?
